The Enterprise Wireless Alliance (EWA) asked the FCC to change the spectrum assignments in the 800 MHz business/industry (B/I) spectrum from 25- to 12.5-kilohertz channels. In the filing, EWA officials said new 12.5-kilohertz channels in this Part 90 band will promote greater spectrum efficiency and encourage the development of new wireless products that current and potential licensees need to expand.

The EWA petition for rulemaking was filed with the FCC Wednesday. The request is limited to the 800 MHz interleaved, expansion and guard bands and doesn't include public-safety spectrum or frequencies included in the ongoing 800 MHz reconfiguration process.

EWA President Mark Crosby said the request makes sense in the current market. "We're asking the FCC to narrowband to 12.5 kilohertz but without a date certain. I'm not suggesting a date certain at all," he said. "The 800 MHz band is based on 25-kilohertz channels. Most of the new technologies, if not all, that are being developed in the lower bands are 12 kilohertz or narrower with a digital component." ...
