NPSTC Submits Channel Naming Proposal for Standardization

(7/20/09)
The National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) submitted a final candidate document on channel naming for standardization. The document was submitted to the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International to complete the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) certification process to meet requirements established within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) national emergency communications plan (NECP).

The proposal reflects the latest updates from the June NPSTC meeting, resolving many user concerns and reaching a naming consensus. Following discussions with NPSTC and the Interdepartmental Radio Advisory Council (IRAC), the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) concluded that due to the wide acceptance of the current channel naming convention LE and IR, the naming convention should remain the same, according to John Powell, chair of the NPSTC interoperability committee.
